Plant growth is controlled by the environment and by the plant's genotype. Many aspects of the environnent can be measured but the plant's genotype is difficult to quantify. However, broad ecotypes may be described in terms of the environment they evolved in. This is especially true for varieties of a species which differ by degree in morphology, but have considerable differences in their physiology.
