ATOD: A Design Investigation of Active Transport Oriented Development.
This research explores the relationship between active transport and density, exploring where and what housing could look like if designed with active transport users as the primary occupant in mind. This research uses Wellington, NZ, as a case study to develop design-led research answers to what an Active Transport Oriented Development (ATOD) is and how it can fit within the existing urban fabric. The toolkit contains a series of small design interventions, that can be made architecturally to medium/high-density residential buildings, to accommodate active transport users best. Active transport-oriented development should be integrated with other urban design and sustainable mobility concepts, such as the 15-minute city or Bicycle Urbanism, holistically creating more livable, sustainable and resilient urban environments.
