This report summarises 62 complaints received by Aotearoa Justice Watch, relating to people’s experiences with New Zealand Police and prisons. These complaints were compiled and analysed by Dr Ti Lamusse, Lecturer in Criminology at Victoria University of Wellington.
The report is split into two sections: prisons and policing. It is important to note that the allegations made in this report have not been independently verified. However, over several years there has been an ongoing stream of serious issues raised about the criminal justice system in New Zealand.
The complaints contained within this report make serious allegations that fundamentally challenge the legitimacy of the New Zealand criminal justice system. They suggest a need for urgent and transformative change to the justice system to ensure that it upholds the dignity of all those who come into contact with it.
