Some comments in honour of K. Alex Müeller are presented, reflecting the ground-shift in superconductivity and solid-state physics that followed his discovery, along with Bednorz, of cuprate superconductors. This has led to a broad and growing suite of applications encompassing all sectors of society – energy, transport, health, space, communications, defence and research. It established a net of friendships and collaborations around the globe. It also created a long-standing puzzle as to the microscopic origins of high-temperature superconductivity that has challenged some of the greatest minds in solid-state physics, and still continues to do so.
