In a context of an ascendant right and a growing movement of hatred toward the rainbow community, particularly trans women, criminology in Aotearoa has been slow to respond. Currently, there is a profound lack of queer experiences and queer theorising within the discipline of criminology. This absence is particularly troubling at a time where queer people may be at increased risk of victimisation, including from the state and the criminal justice system. This paper aims to outline some theoretical and research terrain for a queer criminology of Aotearoa. It draws on insights from queer criminologists abroad to advocate for a specific research agenda that responds to our current conditions, including the ongoing settler colonisation of Aotearoa.
